Last year Matt bought a goldfish starter kit complete with a bowl, rocks and food. He got a fish, named him Ralph and then the fish died the next day. We kept meaning to get him another fish, they cost all of $0.25, but somehow it never happened.
This summer the kids have been participating in the library's summer reading program and one their prizes was a free goldfish. So for family home evening we took all the kids down to the pet store and picked out their prize fish.
They were all ecstatic. We set up the bowl in advance to get the water acclimated for our new friends. Matt named his fish Ralph (apparently he has limited creativity when it comes to fish names). Ella named her's Sara (picking the name of a favorite cousin is always a good choice) and Grace called her's Baby (because goldfish are small and anything small must be a baby right?)
We were all very excited about our new pets. I just hoped they would live longer than a day. So did the kids. The fish were included in our nightly prayers for days.
And the fish lived! They even survived Ella accidentally dumping the entire jar of fish food into their tank.
But all good things must come to an end. After about 3 weeks all the fish died. The kids were a bit sad but seemed to enjoy the few weeks of being pet owners. Maybe we'll try again next summer.
